Tanglefoot Trail Weekend
October 11–13, 2019
We're returning to Mississippi, this time to New Albany and the Tanglefoot Trail. The Tanglefoot is Mississippi's newest and longest rail-trail, 44 miles long from New Albany in the north to Houston in the south. The route was first created by the Chickasaw Indians, who named it the King's Highway. The railroad line was built by Col. William C. Falkner, great grandfather of the author, William Faulkner, who was born in New Albany before moving to Oxford.

Rails–to–Trails.org says …
"Stretching nearly 44 miles through the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area, the Tanglefoot Trail winds through three counties. Journey into the region's rich history as you travel through mature hardwood forests, fields of cotton and soybeans and majestic wetlands—and experience the economic, transportation, and health and wellness opportunities this magnificent trail delivers to the communities it connects. You'll see why the Tanglefoot has been inducted into the 2019 Rail-Trail Hall of Fame."

The Weekend Itinerary
Friday Evening
Gather in New Albany, about four hours drive from Auburn. In the evening, meet at Tallahatchie Gourmet for grub and grog, tall tales, and planning for the weekend.
Saturday
We'll ride the Tanglefoot Trail, Mississippi's newest and longest rail-trail. The Tanglefoot opened in 2013 and is 44–miles long. Several towns along the Trail offer stores and restaurants; on–trail there are four "Whistlestops" that provide restrooms and water. It will be an out-and-back ride, so ride as far as you like before returning to New Albany. In the evening, meet up at Ciao Chow for food and grub, etc.
Sunday
After breakfast, check out of the hotel and drive 30 minutes towards Auburn to Tupelo. First park at the Natchez Trace Visitors Center at Milepost 266 and ride the Trace (as many miles as you like out and back), then visit Elvis Presley's birthplace before heading home.
The Natchez Trace Visitors Center is at Milepost 266. Places of interest within five miles either way include Confederate gravesites, Old Town Overloook, Chickasaw Village Site, and a six-mile walking section of National Scenic Trail.
